on the front page of the local paper :-D

Not just me! No I didn't kill anyone! except a few weeds. http://downloads.thepostnewspaper.co.nz/this_weeks_post.pdf take a look. Students efforts tidy up community. That's the one to read. for those of you who want to know where I am in the photo here's a clue... in the middle standing up.
This is the area we cleared up... there is a reason you can't see the hill to the left in this photo, it was pretty ugly
In the photo we are arranged around one of the large piles of weeds we made, there was a second larger one and some full bags of weeds we pulled out. there was also quite a bit of rubbish from decades of people just dumping stuff there.
what you won't read about it one of us (not going to name and shame) hit a pipe (whoops) small one fortunately, luckily it was turned off at one of the walls on the buildings near by. Nearly the whole Prefect team was involved in this. As well as two German exchange students, these girls were just walking past and decided to muck in. I found loads of Skinks (little lizards) which one of the German girls found really cute, she ended up with a skink on her hand for quite a while. Anyway we cleared the hill of ivy and weeds, revealing the bare earth beneath and years of rubbish, including a really old coke bottle, the front (minus the door) or a fire place, a radiator and some really old light bulbs.
this is what a skink looks like

Anyway we are planning to go back and re-plant the hillside at a later date! so this is a bit of a work in progress. Fun parts of the day were sliding down the hill pulling the ivy down (quite effective) low points were the looks we got from passers by, who must have thought we were on community service.

Oh well have a nice day/night everyone and if your ever in this part of the world come visit Waiuku and marvel at the hillside we cleaned up... oh yes and visit.

    1. it was. though the pipe was a bit of a bugger. I was assigned to stand on it until we found a bit of concrete to cover it to stop it spraying water everywhere... then we found where we could turn it off.

    3. I didn't mention anything about a prize... besides who would want a prize for finding me, I am not wanted or anything (well I hope I'm wanted but not in a criminal sort of way)

  9. I nearly missed this posting. Sometimes they slip off the front page before I get to see them.

Sounds like a fun day in the sun, and a job well done (though perhaps less happy for the skinks, geckoes, lizards and other reptilia that might have been lurking in the undergrowth. Speaking of which, for a wild moment I though we were going to be told that the animal pictures was going to be the rare but ferocious Oronegrin Dragon, a creature best avoided - by several hundred metres, if possible, and upwind at that. An Oronegrin soldier figure would have given the scale ('These lizzidy things are shoodge, Trev, you don't wanna get anywhere near them. Scoff yez whole, Mate, even yer buttons.' ...

    1. that would be fun. but I don't think that the plastic would do the skinks any good and it won't do my figures any favours if they got eaten. though giant lizards would be fun to include.

it was a great day and I am glad I participated. looks slightly greener after the rain we've had so I think we might have some plants to pull out before we add some new ones.
